Formerly called "the Robert story", my novel now has a working title... and its very own web page!

dum spiro spero: the Warrior of Kintail is the tale of a young man named Robert, who has grown up in the small village of Kintail, Scotland during the early 18th century. It is a struggle to break free from his family, to make a name for himself, to become the person he wants to be. However the main theme in this coming-of-age tale is good old-fashioned Scottish honor.

dum spiro spero: the Warrior of Kintail presents a unique mixture of traditional Scottish ways from the clans, to the risings, as well as more magickal elements found in Scottish folk stories such as ghosts and prophecies. Buried beneath the dramatic tale of a young man trying to find truth in the world, is the loyalty of friendship, political influences, and a most realistic portrayal of life from that period in Scottish history.

Characters:

The following are breif descriptions of most of the characters in the novel.

Robert Douglas MacLennan: A young man of 17 who grew up in the Highland village of Kintail. He has dreams to become an honorable warrior, but finds that there's more to living his dreams than he ever thought possible.

Family: "home sweet home..."
  • Dugald MacLennan: Robert's father. He is strong and stern towards Robert, yet posesses a weakness for fighting. Like his father before him, he has no honor to bring the clan, and lives for his wife and sons more than anything else.
  • Betty MacLennan: Robert's Mother. Once a kind and loving mother, she is now an invalid, having had an accident which Dugald blames himself for. "She canna talk, but she can smile"
  • Alasdair MacLennan: Robert's younger, and only brother. Alasdair is a quiet, sensitive boy, and his father's favorite. He is loyal and obediant, and never passes up an opportunity to put Robert in misery.

Friends: "Good friends are never far away"
  • Ian MacLennan: Robert's childhood friend. A foundling, Ian was taken in by MacLennans and became Robert's closest friend in no time. He is reasonable, dashing, and more loyal to Robert than anyone ever could be.
  • Chlora MacLennan: Ian's sister. Another close friend from Robert's childhood. She is a few years older than Robert, but is always there for him when he needs a woman's touch.

Cheiftain's Family:
  • Cheif John MacLennan: The MacLennan Clan Cheiftain. He is a portly man with a rich sense of humor. He is also as skilled in battle as he is gifted in kindness.
  • Kala MacLennan: The cheiftain's only daughter. Kala is the most beautiful lass in the village, thus attracting Robert's eye and attention. She is betrothed to a Grant as a bond of peace between the clans.

Mentors:
  • Alec MacLennan: Brother to the cheiftian, Alec was once the greatest warrior in the village. He is kind, experienced, and more than willing to do a little teaching. He also has a strong lisp which, coupled with his rich accent, makes everyone laugh.
  • Jenny MacLennan: Alec's wife. She is a bit chubby but the most loving person Robert has ever known. Jenny is the head of the household in her rules and sensitivity, and strong in her convictions, as well as in knowing what a young lad needs to learn.

The Group: "You have to know your place"
  • Tremain MacLennan: The leader. Packed full of ideas, he is the one they all look to for guidence and experience.
  • Leslie MacLennan: Tremain's man. Leslie is motherly toward the group, caring, protective, but he is Tremain's main man. He is the first to defend the leader, and the one who is not afraid to follow Tremain anywhere.
  • Ennis MacLennan: The objectioner. Ennis and Tremain rarely see eye-to-eye. Ennis is the one to present the alternative, and question his leader, making the group stronger for it.
  • Denholm MacLennan: The follower. A born follower, Denholm calms arguements and keeps order in the group when even leslie fails. He is loyal and skilled in more areas than even he realizes.
  • Busby MacLennan: The Laddie. Robert's choice to the group, and the youngest by far, Busby is weak and sensitive. However, he has the skills, the drive, and surprises each of them over time.

Others:
  • Skye: A Druid. Skye is quiet, introspective, and knowledgable. He cares as much for Robert as himself, and wishes only to try to help his travelling compainion through the bad patch in his life.
  • Mary: A ghost. Stuck between worlds, she calls to Robert-- and Robert only-- for help. She is afraid of the darkness, suspiscious of everything, and especially angry with the English.
  • Edmund MacLennan: A poker player. The best in the village at cards, Robert makes it a point to not only become buddies with him, but attempt to conquer him.

  • Byron:An English officer. After a villiage burning, Byron stumbles upon Robert and refuses to let him alone.
